Skin Cancer Is No Joke

I spent a lot of time in the sun as a kid and a teenager….and young adult. Okay, so let says 25+ years of suntans and sunburns and that one little stint as a teenager where I tried to get that golden tan color, frying myself in the sun for skin that I hardly ever even showed.

One day I noticed a funny freckle on my shoulder, it looked different than all the others. Over the next decade I would keep my eye on it, telling myself I should get it check out with a dermatologist. Even as this freckle began to change shape. When it began to erupt, causing a scab to form I kept telling myself to get it check out….for months. Finally I did.

I waited nearly a month for the biopsy results to come in, but I had already been looking up what different types of cancer caused what symptoms. So when the news came back that it was cancer, I had an understanding of what was being explained to me. I had to wait two weeks before they could cut it out of my shoulder. The worst part was the numbing agent, like being stung by a scorpion over and over again. It’s been a month since the surgery and it’s healed up nicely. It’s a large scar about 3-4 inches, but it’s better than the alternative.

So don’t wait. Get those spots check out.
